Corfu Cricket

The sport of Cricket appeared in the island of Corfu, during the British occupation, on April 23, 1823 with a game between officers of the Royal Navy. The locals were attracted by the recreational team game and showed great interest in learning the sport. The British volunteered to teach them and it took only 12 years for the Corfiots to learn the game and created two local groups to play with the British.
The cricket games are organized every year in the central square of Corfu, Esplanade, as well as in the court of marina in Gouvia. The Greek Cricket Federation was founded in 1996 in Corfu is a member of the European Cricket Council as an affiliate member and also a member of the International Cricket Council. The Festival of Cricket takes place from May to June and from September to October. With the festival organizing, the Rotary Cup has begun to be organized and take place in July 2010.

Corfu Trail

Since the Corfu Trail was established in 2001, thousands of walkers have followed it the length of the island. 220 kilometres long, Corfu’s long-distance walking route leads into a landscape untouched by the mass tourism that has scarred parts of the coastline, delving through the central countryside which visitors rarely discover and explore. Such is the variety of Corfu’s scenery that walkers spend no more than an hour in any one landscape; indeed, around every corner a new scene stuns the eye. From the vast beaches and juniper dunes in the island’s south, through the rolling olive groves of the central section, to the karst plateau and rugged gorges in the north, the Corfu Trail reveals an island paradise ideal for walkers.
