Musicians

The famous musical composer Nikolaos knight Chalikiopoulos Manzaros (1795-1873)

Studied music in Corfu and later continued his education in the Music Academy in Naples. He was associated with the Director Gingarelli, who proposed to him to be the next Director of the Academy. Mantzaros refused the directorship as well as the one in the Music School of Milano and decided to return to Corfu. He established the Philharmonic Society of Corfu, where he became a life president teaching for free. He was associated with D. Solomos, J. Polylas, A.Moustoksidis. He composed four times (1828-1830-1844 and 1861) the National Anthem of Greece. Other famous pieces of his work were, “Evrikomi”, “Xanthoula”, “Avgoula” “Farmakomeni”, and the “Hymn of Baron”. He composed symphonies, orthodox and Catholic Masses, as well as piano, hymns, marches, pieces of vals, serenades, arias, and many more.

The musician Spyros Xyndas (1814-1896)

Was devoted to the Greek music and composed many choir pieces.

The musician Spyros Samaras.

Born in 1861 and died in 1917 in Athens. He studied in Paris. His first piece of work was the melodrama “Flora Mirabilis”, which was presented in the theatre of Carcano of Milan. It was successful and he was considered as one of the leaders of Realists, as Leon Cavalo, Puccini and Mascani. Until 1910 he traveled in many European countries presenting his unique work as: Medge (Rome, 1888), Lionella (Milan, 1891), Storia D’amore (Milan, 1895), Rea (Florence, 1908). In 1889, he presented “Flora Mirabilis” in Corfu and Athens. The overture, Rea, is the famous Olympic Hymn, which is played both at the beginning and the end of the Olympic games. The Olympic Hymn was first played in the Olympic Games of Athens in 1896, but the International Olympic Committee declared it the official anthem in 1957. The words of the Olympic Hymn belong to our national poet and writer Kostis Palamas.

The musician Joseph Kaisaris (1846-1922).

Composed military music, as well as Spyros Kaisaris (1859-1946).

The musician Ageliki Zavitsianou-Kapelou.

Born in the end of 19th century and she was the first Greek woman harpist.

The musician Alexander Grec (1876-1959)

Born in Corfu. He studied in Italy and he composed operas, music for ballet and piano.
