He was born in Corfu, where he started his studies and continued later in Ioannina. He studied in Italy ancient and middle age philosophy, Latin and Jewish philology. He was distinguished for his theological education. In 1737, he returned to Ioannina and was ordained as monk. He traveled in Greece and Europe. In 1750, he was appointed Director of the school in Kozani and later Director of the Athonian School of the Holy Mountain (Athos Mount). In 1763 he went to Romania and Germany. He was distinguished for his philosophical and theological knowledge and became the spiritual person for Aikaterini B’ of Russia. In 1802 he moved to the monastery of Saint Alexander in Nefski, till the end of his life. Nikiforos Theotokis (1731-1800). Born in Corfu and he is one of the Great Teachers of the Greek nation with E. Voulgaris. He studied philosophy, theology, music and mathematics in Bologna and Padova. In 1762, he returned to Corfu and was ordained a monk. He had a remarkable education and was appointed rhetorician of the Great Church in Constantinople. In 1779 he became a Bishop and then Metropolitan Bishop. He lived in Moscow till the end of his life. The philosopher Knight Peter Vrailas – ArmenisWas born in Corfu in 1812 and died in London in 1884. He studied Law and Philosophy in Paris. In 1835, he returned to Corfu, where he founded the Reformers part. In 1852, he was appointed Professor in the Ionian Academy, later he was elected President of the Senate for the Economy. In 1854, he was appointed Professor of Philosophy in the Ionian Academy. He was elected Deputy of Corfu, after the union of the Ionian Islands with Greece. On 1864 he was appointed ambassador to London, then in Petroupolis, in Paris and once more in London. He was appointed the first president of the Reading Society in Corfu. He wrote many philosophical researches. He is considered one of the most important philosophers of the 19th century. Emanouel Theotokis (1777-1837).Was the President of the Senate during the French Empire and French gave him the title of Baron. He also promoted the Greek language. The historical writer Andreas Marmoras.Lived during the 16th century and wrote the first history of Corfu. The scholar Thomas Flaginnis Was born at the beginning of the 16th century and became Law Professor in the Patavio University. After he died, the Flaginio School was established due to his financial contribution. The literary Constantinos conte Theotokis or Dinos Theotokis (1872-1923).Was a short stories writer, poet and translator. He is the most characteristic representative of the Corfiot School. He graduated from Corfu high school and went to Paris, where he studied philology, mathematics, positive sciences and philosophy. Adjoined with his wife Ernestina Von Mallowitz went to Prague, Vienna and Munich. They returned to Corfu and Theotokis associated with Lorenzo Mavilis. On 1898 he went to Grants where he studied for six months and in 1907 went to Munach, where he studied 2 years. He stabelized his socialist ideology and he ideologically connected with the socialist K. Hatzopoulos. In 1911 they established the Socialist Society of Corfu. He learned French, English, Italian, German, Spanish, Russian, ancient Greek, Latin, ancient Sanskrit, Jewish and ancient Persian. He translated Virgilio, the Bedouin Hymns, Maharavata, Sakountala, Malavika, Agnimitra of the poet Kalidasa, Nalas and Damayanti and the tragedies of Shakespeare, -Othello, Tempest, MacBeth, King Lear, Hamlet, and Ermanos and Dorothy of Ghaite. The literary Irini Dendrinou (1879-1971). Was the representative woman of the Corfiot Literary School. She was a short stories writer, translator, researcher and sonnets composer. The contribution of Dendrinou was regarded as having action in intellectual and artistic associations, fight for the emancipation of women, lectures, theatrical and concert performances. She served as Director of the “Corfiot Anthology”, a magazine published with the assistance of Theotokis, Kojevinas, Zavitsianos, Stamatopoulos, Lefteriotis, Moussouris, Hatzopoulos, Porfiras and Galanis. The novelist and historical writer Dimitrios Arliotis (1777-1860).Graduated from Padova University and was devoted to literature and history. The author Nikos Lefteriotis (1889-1965).Was also a poet, translator, and a researcher of Corfiot history. Andreas Andreadis (1876-1935).Born in Corfu and graduated in Law from the University of Paris. In 1899 went to Great Britain, where he studied the Economics and wrote the history of the Bank of England. In 1906, he became Professor of Economics and Statistics in the Law University of Athens. |
