Corfiot PaintersIoannis Paramythiotis.Was born in Corfu (approx. 1680) and he flourished during the first years of the 18th century. He learned the Cretan hagiography in Corfu, which he engaged it to the Byzantine technique. The most important piece of his work was the “Last Supper” in Metropolis church and “May be the light” in the church of Saint Eleftherios, presenting the 9 phases of the Creation of the World. Evgenios Chryssoloras.Was born in Corfu. The most pieces of his work are saved in Corfu. He painted the Scenes of the New Bible in the church of Saint Eleftherios and icons in the church of Saint Spyridon, the church of Christ’s Resurrection in the cemetery of Garitsa and the Catholic Church. Spyros Sperantzas.Was born in Corfu and flourished between 1750 and 1775. He painted icons and decorated in the churches of Saint Spyridon, Saints Jason and Sossipatros, Saint Eleftherios, Holy Trinity in Garitsa and many more. Emmanuel Ganfournaris.Was born in Corfu but lived a great part of his life in Venice. He flourished between 1590 and 1625. His pieces can be found in the Vatican, the Record of Venice, the Byzantine Museum of Athens, the Benaki museum etc. The painter Ioannis Kalosgouros.Was born in Corfu (1794-1878). He graduated from the school of Pavlos Prosalentis and then moved to Venice. He created the bust of Eleni, contessa of Mocenigos, the bust of Guilfor, the bas-reliefs in Douglas column and the hagiography in the Church of Ar. Theodoron in Stratia village. The painter and hagiographer Nikolaos Aspiotis. Was born in Corfu (1816-1891). He replaced the roof of the Church of Saint Spyridon in 1856, which was originally the work of P. Doxaras. He restored the hagiographies of the Church of Holy Mother in Kastellani Messis. The painter Spyros Platsaios. Was born in Corfu (1855-1920). He was educated in Italy. He was the first of the Corfiot School and was the best in aquarelle. He taught his next generation of the Corfiot painters. The painter Knight Spyros Prosalentis, (1830-1876).Son of Pavlos Prosalentis was born in Corfu. He was educated in the School of his father and then to the Fine Art School in Venice. In 1865, he was selected Professor to the Metsovio Polytechnic University. His hagiographies are still saved in the Church of Saint Spyridon in Corfu. His two sons, Knight Pavlos Prosalentis, (1859-1894) and Knight Aemilios Prosalentis, (1859-1926) followed the school of their father and contributed to the art of painting. The painter and lithographer Markos Zavitsianos. Was born in Constantinople in 1884. He graduated from the Great School of the Nation in Fanari and also in Munach. On his return in Corfu, he worked in the “Corfiot Anthology”. He also made the compositions for the books of Dinos Theotokis. The painter Dionysios Sgouros (1883-1977). Was born in Corfu. He studied painting by Eleni Prosalenti and H.Pachis. He continued his education in Venice and Mount Athos. He was painting portraits and also he was a hagiographer. He made hagiographies in Saint Nikolas in Korakiana, Saint Nikolas in Kato Korakiana, Saint Theodoros in Agious Doulous, Pantokratoras of the Mouse Island, and painted portraits in the Philharmonic Manzaros. The painter and sculpurist Markos Pieris (1865-1954). Was born in Corfu. He graduated in Italy. In 1911 he was the one of the Corfiots who established a department of naked art at the Art and Craft School of Corfu where he was teaching. He was interested in aquarelle, oil painting and hagiography. Moreover, he sculptured busts and statues. In 1943, his house being burned, with 500 pieces of work, when Germans bombarded Corfu. His work was presented in many exhibitions in Italy. The painter Georgios Samartzis. Was born in Corfu and he studied in Naples. He painted portraits, landscapes, hagiographies and synthesis. Some remarkable pieces of his work are saved in the Municipal Art Gallery. The painter Spyros Karvelis (1868-1942).Studied in the Art School of Corfu and then continued his studies in Italy. He was very good aquarellist. He painted the Achillion. The painter Spyros Pizanis (1870-1927). Was born in Corfu. He studied in Rome and in the Fine Art School of Metsovio Polytechnic University in Athens. He followed the impressionism and presented oil painting and aquarelles. The painter Contessa Nancy Kapodistria (1880-1965). Studied in Petroupolis in Russia and then went to Munach. She followed the impressionism and painted Corfiot landscapes. The painter Lycourgos Kojevinas (1887-1950).Studied in Paris and he was an important oil and bronze painter. |
