Architects – SculpturesStamatis Voulgaris (1774-1842) Was architect, geographer and painter. During the French occupation, the French General Chabeau took him to France. He graduated from the Military School as a mechanic and became the Colonel of the French army. In 1829, he returned to Greece and took charge of the organization of the mechanic department in the army. Kapodistrias considered him as one of the most important persons in order to achieve the re-establishment of the Greek State. Voulgaris designed the street plans of Patras and the suburb of Welfare in Nafplio, as well as the construction of the public works in Pelopennese and was also active in politics. He served as the Lord of Education of the Ionian State. He wrote Kapodistrias’ and his own biography with the title “Memoirs”. The sculpture and painter Pavlos Knight Prosalentis (1784-1837) Born in Corfu and studied in Italy, where he was educated by the famous Italian teacher of sculpture, Canova. On his return in Corfu, he was appointed as Professor of the Academy of Science of the Ionian Islands. Later, he established his own school of painting and sculpture. In 1815, the Senate decided to open it for the public education as an educational institute by the name Academy of Fine Arts and numerous painters graduated. He sculptured the bust of Maitland in Ithaca and Kefalonia, the statue of Lord Adams in the yard of the Palace and the statue of Artemis, which is housed in London. We can find his painting in the Platitera Monastery. Gerasimos Pitzamanos (1787-1825)Studied Fine Arts in Italy. He was appointed as Professor in the Imperial Academy of Russia. He taught architecture in the Ionian Academy. |
